It specializes mainly in medicine and pharmacy, but also has the sciences faculty. UCBL’s is involved in more than main 30 European accredited projects where it aims to develop a standard European teaching system. Lyon is, after Paris, the second largest university town in France; it has 4 universities (Lyon 1, Lyon 2, Lyon 3, Catholic University) and many prestigious elite academies: Ecoles Normales Supérieures (ENS Lyon and ENS Arts and Social Sciences), Ecole Centrale School of Engineering (ECL), National Institute of Applied Science (INSA), School of Advanced Studies in Chemistry, Physics and Electronics (ESCPE), Textile and Chemicals Institute (ITECH), EM Lyon (Management), National School of Veterinary Science, National School of Advanced Studies in Information Science and Librarianship (ENSSIB),amongst others.
The range of fields studied by research laboratories and teams cover all the main areas of human and social sciences, economics and law, material sciences and technology, as well as life and health sciences. Lyon's research potential notably includes teacher-researchers in the universities and grandes écoles, researchers at the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research, 2300 persons in all), at INSERM (National Institute for Medical Research), INRA (National Institute for Agronomic Research), IARC, the BSL4 Laboratory, and at private industrial laboratories. Complex Decision Sciences and Health Policies
The Department of Complex Decision Sciences and Health Policies (DCDSHP) is composed of an interdisciplinary team including mathematicians, computer scientists, specialists in management sciences and people from the health sector who perform a scientific activity in the decision making process applied to the health care sector. The DCDSHP proposes a fundamental approach to decision making problems with high level theoretical work on modeling and simulating preferences aggregation processes, ‘negotiation phenomena’ and on new methods for acquiring and analyzing complex and heterogeneous data. From a practical point of view, the DCDSHP focuses on problems relating to medical economic evaluation of strategies or policies in health care delivery, to different ways for health care sector financing, to the management of health care delivery organizations and problems relating to social security cover.
Ecole Pratique des Hautes EtudesThe EPHE’s two-fold mission is to advance research and to provide training through the practice of research work in the wide variety of its fields of competence. Being a practical school (école pratique) means that the EPHE focuses on practical training in basic and applied scientific research. This takes the form of seminars, conferences, symposia, traineeships, tutorials and methodological courses, with a view to giving EPHE students and auditors a taste for research through the practice of individual research work.
